UK-Qatar Statement on Darfur

The Prime Minister of the State of Qatar and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom discussed the situation in Darfur during their meeting in Doha on 2 November. They expressed their strong commitment to peace in Darfur and across Sudan, and to ease the suffering of people there. They expressed their shared support for the leadership of the African Union and United Nations chief mediator for Darfur, Djibril Bassolé.

The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom commended the intensive efforts by the State of Qatar to engage key parties in Sudan and throughout the region, including neighbouring countries, in the cause of peace in Darfur. He reaffirmed the United Kingdom’s readiness to continue to contribute actively to work to achieve a lasting peace settlement and security for the people of Darfur.

The Prime Ministers jointly called on all parties in Sudan and across the region to engage with the State of Qatar and Djibril Bassolé, to attend the proposed meetings, and to support progress towards peace.
