Defence
The Defence Section co-ordinates all the military business in which the UK becomes involved in Qatar and acts as the interface between the United Kingdom Forces and those of Qatar. The bulk of our daily work includes arranging training and organising inward and outward visits for senior members of both services. We have regular visits by Royal Navy ships and on the completion of the visit there is normally a joint exercise in Qatar coastal waters with the Qatar Emiri Navy. As of September 2008, the United Kingdom has deployed 3 Army officers to Qatar on Loan Service. They will be embedded in the staff of the Ahmed Bin Mohammed Military College and will be responsible for advising the Qatar Armed Forces as to how to develop their Military College. This is the first time that the United Kingdom has had Loan Service Personnel working in Qatar and the initiative has been warmly welcomed by the Qatar Armed Forces.
The Defence Section consists of the following members of staff:
the Defence Attaché – Wing Commander Michael Palmer
the Assistant Defence Attaché – Chief Petty Officer Miriam Charlton
the Defence Section Driver – Mr Abdul Azeez Syed.
