England-Brazil football match in Doha

England-Brazil football match in Doha

Over 10,000 England fans turned out to see England play Brazil in Doha on November 14.

The Brazil-England friendly was one of the highest profile sporting events in the Middle East this year, with Qatar showcasing the 50,000 capacity Khalifa International Stadium as part of their bid to host the 2022 World Cup. After injury forced John Terry out of the side, Wayne Rooney captained England for the first time.

Brazil won the game 1-0 with a goal by Nilmar in the 47th minute. But despite the disappointment of the result, England fans made the most of the spectacular event, enjoying a sound and light show before the game and a Fans Zone outside the stadium featuring music, entertainment and food from England and Brazil.

British Ambassador John Hawkins said: "This match was yet another example of the excellent partnership between the UK and Qatar. We are delighted that the game went so well, and the thousands of England supporters that came both from Britain and from around the region made the event really special."

Ambassador Hawkins also pointed to England's own bid to host the World Cup in 2018: "England's bid to host will be a strong one. You only have to see the passion of the English fans here today to see how much enthusiasm there is for the global game in England."

British Embassy staff and the England Football Supporters' Federation were on hand to assist English fans in the Fans Zone at the stadium, as well as at Doha International Airport and at the Ramada Plaza hotel. The Embassy had worked closely with the Qatar Football Association to provide information to fans on Qatar's customs and local laws and local expectations for the match.

British Consul Joel Watson said: "We felt it was very important that fans arriving in Doha had an understanding of Qatari culture and tradition. We were pleased that these efforts were well-received both by England fans and the Qatari community and that the Embassy didn't have a single serious incident to deal with over the whole weekend: a tribute to the Qatari authorities and the excellent English fans."
